Timing: The Luck of the Draw?

"Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance."

Cowboy Proverb

Many talk about "timing" as though it were luck; something over which you have little control.

So is an unproductive mid August rain dance in the Mojave Desert just unlucky?

You can at least stack the deck a bit by purposely considering timing along with all other aspects of big decisions.

Do you? If not, this may be the right time to start.

  1. Well maybe we can think of it as "luck" if we agree you can sometimes make luck.

For example, I am selectively investing in both private and public companies because I feel there are some great bargains to be had.

If these investments turn out well, some will say I was lucky. I prefer to think I correctly surmised the timing was right.

And if they lose value, well, people will just say I wasn't very smart.

Not the first nor probably last time I've heard that.

  2. Well based on the performance of my recent investments, there isn't much likelihood of anyone referring to me as "lucky."

As to the alternative . . . I'm used to that.

  3. I don't recall any marketing meetings (I'm in marketing) where anyone in my company said anything about timing.
