Bureaucracy: Some (How Much?) Necessary Evil

"Any sufficiently advanced bureaucracy is indistinguishable from molasses."

Author Unknown

There is very little flattering in the definition of "bureaucracy" but to be fair, few would argue that some to a lot of what those we call bureaucrats do, is necessary.

And least you think this only applies to government, parish the thought. Business has its bureaucratic side as well.

The trick is to only pay for that bureaucracy which is necessary and essential to the organization.

How do you know what that is?
How much of what you do is bureaucratic?

  1. A good start is to ask "Is this necessary?" followed by "In what way?" whenever anything that could in anyway be considered bureaucratic is being considered.

That doesn't mean it won't happen, isn't necessary, etc. but just as every expense should be challenged, so too should bureaucracy.

  2. Just as we get more bureaucracy in government in difficult times such as now, so too do we get more in our businesses when things don't go as planned.

And often what the bureaucracy is supposed to help has nothing to do with the business; for example, when you bank demands more reporting to assure them that you know what you're doing. And if not the bank then the board, absentee owners, investors, etc.

You may not like it but it is to be expected. If you were them and it was your money, you'd do the same. So head it off and put them down at the head of your "interested parties" list; people you must communicate with before they demand that you do in ways you won't like.
