Planning: What Has, What Is, What Will

"Skate to where the puck is going, not where it is."

Wayne Gretzky

Possibly the most over used, abused way too oft quoted advice given by consultants, now me included it would appear. And some suggest Wayne never even said this, that his father did.

Whatever the truth, the concept is real. Anticipate!

Warren Buffet had this in mind when he said, "If past history was all there was to the game, the richest people would be librarians."

It comes down to planning based on studying what has been, what is, and doing a really good job of divining what will possibly, probably be, with a fall back "Plan B" for those situations where things do not turn our as you expect.

What's your approach to readying yourself for whatever is ahead?

  1. As an old hockey player I really liked the Wayne G's (or his father) definition of what's hockey or any other straight forward game all about. As an "old" business director I also liked the Warren B's humoristic comment about the librarians. As a member of the board of one small subcontracting company in the middle of the current economic crisis I consider that we will need all these skills in future, which will be much more challenging than before. We have to be more straight forward and especially genuine in our doings and we have to know our history in order to forecast the future - in order to make plan Bs or Cs. As a citizen of the Planet Earth I very much liked Obama's comments today on the environmental issues. According to him, USA has to finally start acting according to the hard facts. The most succesful companies can also act, i.e. execute their plans and strategies. Finally, our generation should start thinking our posterity as well.

  2. You're right. These days a Plan B is not enough; we need Plans B, C and maybe a few more just to be sure.
