Management Certainty

"Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd."

Voltaire

And why do you think he feels this way?

Isn't the goal to be as certain as possible of the outcome of our decisions?

  1. I suppose as long as you recognize that you can never really be certain of the future and of unknowns, it's OK to reach decisions as though you are certain.

  2. To which I would add, all critical actions should have a fall-back position should things not go as planned/expected. Count on Plan A but have a Plan B.

  3. i would say 'certainty' is not particularly important when reaching decisions.

management would be an easy science if we were able to make decisions based on 100% known facts - i think one of the keys to good management is the ability to make the 'best' decision possible in a timely manner incorporating all of the data that you have at your disposal (which is almost never complete).

those who think that their decisions are 'certain' think too highly of themselves.
