Finding the Best and the Brightest

"There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly."

R. Buckminster Fuller

Talent.

I suppose if we could always see it we would only surround ourselves with those who have it.

How do you decide who is and is not talented?

  1. Well, to begin, I take issue with your first statement ("I suppose if we could always see it we would only surround ourselves with those who have it.")

I can think of many managers who do not want to have people more talented than they are, around them.

As to finding talent, that's the least of the problem. Getting the most from it is the difficult part and often when you don't, it's not the individual's fault.

  2. You're right Thomas, not everyone wants people around who they feel might look better than they do.

That may be the single biggest impediment to their own advancement.

  3. Who is and is not "talented" depends on what talent you're referring to. Many are technically accomplished at what they do, but not in people skills, and if they are a manager, nothing is more important.
