This reminds me of a story I heard about Ernest Hemingway. While living in Spain, Hemingway entertained some 'boorish' guests from America by taking them to the bullfights. After spending a large sum of money doing so, he was never thanked by his guests; prompting Hemingway to say something to the effect that 'there is no such thing as gratitude, only the expectation of gratitude.'
