What's "Done" Isn't Always

"A computer lets you make more mistakes, faster than any invention in human history-with the possible exception of hand guns and tequila."

He's right.

A lot of people, sometimes me included, confuse output with production.

They are very different things and often "done" is actually not.

Do you measure production? How?

  1. Production, right down to an individual's contribution to the overall good of the company, should be measurable and directly or indirectly related to financial performance. Goals should be set and measured.

  2. Anonymous, I would bet that at least half the jobs in any company, probably much more, are about things that cannot be measured relative to P&L. For example, HR, order entry, customer service reps. I know you can measure how many applicants or orders they process, or how fast they handle calls, but how do you translate that to P&L?
