The Science of Decision Making

"There are in fact two things; science and opinion; the former begets knowledge the latter ignorance."

Hippocrates
4
th century Greek physician

If we accept a broad interpretation of "science" to include all forms of discovery, Hippocrates is telling us that intelligent decision making requires thoughtful, data based analysis.

How do you make your decisions?

  1. I think managers are either data oriented or they're not and you can't make someone be something they never were.

A lot of senior sales managers were successful sale people but the two jobs are totally different (one is selling the other managing.) When you manage you must be comfortable with data analysis, which many sales people aren't.

  2. Decisions are based on the best analysis of the information available during the time of the decision.

In the complex environments of today it's always a mixture of science and opininion. Opinion should be based on qualitative analysis of the whys and hows of the decision making.

Hippocrates must have thought the science at his age explained every possible sickness and symptom. Otherwise he had to make ignorant decisions while he made scientific decisions based on the information available 1600 years ago.
