The Essence of Leading

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, become more, you are a leader."

John Quincy Adams

Notice nothing in that about giving orders, setting priorities that others will follow, being in charge.

Everything refers to doing something that causes others to do positive things ("inspire", "dream", "learn", "become".)

My new and favorite definition of a leader.

  1. Since US politicians can generally only suggest or encourage good citizen behavior, as opposed to what politicians in autocratic governments can do, these would be good leadership qualities.

But I'm not certain most managers will take the time to do this as opposed to just telling subordinates what to do. In that sense, such managers are not much different than the leaders of governments we see as totalitarian.

  2. Excellent if not a bit stretched point Lyle. I see the connection.

And we have to acknowledge that many managers cannot take the time to really lead because they just don't have enough time.

But when they do, I would prefer to see more real leadership as opposed to direction.
