Planning: Who's In Control?

"Drive thy business or it will drive thee."

Benjamin Franklin

Run your business or it or others will do it for you, likely not as you want.

We are all swept along by events, however we can and should attempt to influence, if not control, as much as possible.

Have you ever considered how much of what happens is directly related to what you do as opposed to what others do?

  1. I started my own business over 15 years ago and have been fortunate to have seen it grow, now to over $3 million in annual revenue with 23 employees. But each and every year I feel I have less and less control over what is and will happen to us. Is that normal?

  2. Very normal.

I started the Verity Group in an upstairs bedroom and sold it 11 years later with offices in Chicago, SoCal and Costa Rica, with over 400 employees. The day I moved out of that bedroom office to my first real office was the day I began to feel as though I was losing control. But the good news is I didn't and you're not either. It's just "parental" separation anxiety.

When you start your own company you are forced to do everything yourself, quickly seeing, whether you want to or not, that you cannot do it all. However while you don't want to be alone and look forward to growing, you ironically don't feel comfortable delegating some things to others, which is exactly what you must do if you are to grow.

For me it came down to understanding I was not losing control; only controlling things in a different, less direct way.

Make no mistake about it, you must make that transition or accept that you have reached your growth limits if you don't.
