Insanely Great!

"There is a fine line between genius and insanity."

Oscar Levant

And that line is often a matter of timing.

When Mr. Obama first said he wanted to be president.

When Mr. Jobs first said he wanted Apple to be the leading seller of music and music players.

When you first set what appears to be an impossible goal.

Genius or insanity?

  2. It's the "bandwagon" affect; we only recognize genius after the fact. Obama and Jobs would have been seen as just another failed politician and CEO had they not succeeded. After they did we say they are good at what they do and you know what we would have said had they failed.

  3. Excellent points.

Somewhat ironic isn't it that it is their success rather than their effort that causes us to believe they are good at what they do? (Ironic because we teach our children: "It's not whether you win or lose but rather how you play the game.")

Can you think of any "geniuses" who were also failures? Or must you succeed to be considered good?

  4. I can't in business, science, politics, etc. but we do honor military who die heroically in battle. Some do having achieved their objective while others don't. Is that failure? Were they good or great at what they do even though they died?
