Management Philosophy: Control Or Be Controlled?

Maybe on a higher plane we are in balance but not in the minutia that matters in all our lives.

Small and large things change daily, hourly in some cases, and we are forced to make choices, or have them made for us, concerning what we will and will not do.


All of which is why Oprah is right.


So what's your management style? Just go with it or work to exert some control over as much as possible?

  1. I don't know what my management style is (go with it or try to change things) but it strikes me that the more people try to change things, the more likely it is they are to be frustrated when they find they can't.

  2. I agree Sharon but does the fact that you feel that way mean you conclude it is better not to try to change things?

    As an aside, being frustrated is a given with the important question being, why? Looking at myself, I know some of my frustration is my own fault whereas other times it's not.

    However whatever the cause, good managers quickly get over being frustrated by addressing the root problem, even when it is them.

  3. i tend to be the opposite of sharon. generally speaking, i like to tinker with things (processes, procedures, etc) to see if they can be improved. i don't change things purely for the sake of change but my overriding philosophy is that everything can be improved to a certain extent. i've worked for 20 years in tiny companies and billion dollar companies and i've never found a situation where things were working perfectly.

    but perhaps to sharon's point, a change mindset is not always welcome in certain organizations with certain cultures. let's face it...there are some companies or some depts where all they're interested in doing is maintaining the status quo. if you bring in a change agent into that environment, you can guarantee some fireworks.
