Social Network Marketing: To Them Or Through Them?

"The future belongs to the marketers who establish a foundation and process where interested people can market to each other. Ignite consumer networks and then get out of the way and let them talk."

Seth Godin
Entrepreneur/Author

If you are a marketer and have little or no idea what Mr. Godin is suggesting, you're missing the potential represented by social network marketing.

Missing potential but hardly alone.

While much talked about, few companies have come up with anything approaching a viable social network marketing strategy, so there's still time.

Twitter, Facebook, My Space, LinkedIn, Plaxo; likely all names you have at least heard about if not used yourself.

But what about Amie Street, Cafe Mom and Muxlim or the more than 100 others listed in a Wikipedia article? A list described as being incomplete.

What is your social network marketing strategy?

  1. We haven't got a clue. This comes up in meetings but I never hear anything specific nor do I see much happening with it after the meeting is over. Only how huge it's going to be.

  2. I am so glad to hear someone else say they don't know what to do.

We're a group of late 20/early 30 somethings, all Tweeting away, with Facebook pages, etc., telling each other how down we are with social marketing, but I don't think so.

And is it just me or does 99% of what gets posted to Twitter seem pretty lame to the rest of you as well?

  3. Thanks for the honest replies.

If it's any consolation you are far from alone. I see a lot of companies who talk social network marketing but I don't know of any who really have it nailed including the social networks themselves (Twitter, Facebook, My Space, etc.)

Remember good marketing requires a well balanced "marketing mix" and use of social networks is just another (new) piece of the marketing "pie". But remember it's not the whole pie, just a piece.

Anyone who thinks that social networking marketing is all the marketing you need, doesn't understand the importance of "mix" in the phrase "marketing mix". If all you use is one tool out of your tool box, you won't build anything.

It's out there to be done, it will be done, but it hasn't happened yet.
