Just Because You Can't See It . . .

"Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future."

Neils Bohr
Early 20th century Danish physicist

Many read quotes like this and conclude that is the reason there is no point in planning; however I doubt Mr. Bohr would, given his field.

Science is based on making and proving or disproving hypotheses and it is no different in business.

No one knows what the future will bring but that doesn't mean we shouldn't make assumptions and plan accordingly.

Agree?

  1. Agree, but good planning is hard to do and uncomfortable for many managers who don't like being held accountable for things they don't know or understand.

  3. Paula is right but the fact that so much is unknown and must be assumed, can be used to make the point that planning is critical.

Also, a true team will take joint responsibility for the outcomes of individual members, presuming of course that the individual does her or her job.

I know sales people live and die by their quotas but for the life of me, I don't know why they allow themselves to be put in that position. They're not responsible for the efficacy of the product, for correct order processing, on time delivery, nor much of anything else that determines whether or not a customer will buy. So why do they readily accept sole responsibility for sales?

  4. Ron, it's in their nature. Salespeople need a firm goal in front of them as much as any NBA player needs a hoop to shot toward.
