"The difference between "Leaders" and "Managers": Managers do things right; Leaders do the right things."

What do you think Ken Lay was thinking when he said:
"I have faith in the market when we get the rules right."
Or maybe he meant "the right rules".

For me this ties to the last post about rules and ethics although Drucker could have been thinking of something other than ethical behavior when he talked about the "right things". What is and is not "right" depends on management's philosophy.

What is and is not "ethical" is not always black and white.
ReplyDeleteI suggest that if you even momentarily think that what you are about to do may not be ethical, you need to really think about doing it particularly if it cannot be undone.
Often people first envision good qualities when thinking about "leaders" but you have to remember, Hitler was a leader; which is why Drucker's quote is so important.
ReplyDeleteThe first question a new manager must ask them self is "will I be ethical?" Answering yes puts you on one path whereas no means you will follow another.
