Conflict Resolution: Ban Email

"The greatest remedy for anger is delay."
Senaca
Roman Philosopher

Senaca's thoughts on anger came just prior to the birth of Christ so I think we can safely rule out the possibility that he was talking about the internet. But I will and specifically my opinion about expressing anger in email.

Don't do it.

Make a corporate law that says any words that can in any way be interpreted negatively must be spoken rather than written.
Senaca had something else in mind when he said the best remedy for anger is delay but in this day of instant communication, forcing verbal communication coupled with the delay that comes from not sending an email is remedy for all.

  1. I wish I had a dollar for every employee dispute I've had to mediate that began needlessly in email. The offending parties would never had said to each other in person what they wrote in their emails, all the worse because they copied half the company on all of it.

  2. I once had a boss who brought two bickering employees together and told them they had to spend the next day together in a room. When they emerged he wanted two things. One resolution to their disagreement and two a plan the entire company would follow to prevent the kind of problems these two were having. If they failed, he promised to fire them. They did both. Funny what you can do when you put your mind to it.

  3. Lyle's solution was beautiful; poetic justice. No doubt some legal issues that would need be addressed but probably workable.
