The Role of Blame in Problem Solving

"A boss fixes blame, a leader corrects mistakes."

Russell H. Ewing
Mid 20th century British journalist

The April 14th edition of the Los Angeles Times has a good story on the blame fixing arguments now going on in Toyota.

Do you need to assign blame before you can correct a problem?

Is there a difference between placing blame on one person or group as opposed to identifying who is responsible for the problem?

  1. Call it what you want but it is important to identify who caused the problem, but only so you can create solutions. Unfortunately in doing so, it often appears that the primary reason is to point the finger at someone, and, in fact, that is the motive of a lot of managers.

  2. Maybe the problem is with the word "blame". There is just no way I can think that through, coming up with anything constructive. In contrast, I can with "responsibility".
