Results: Who Will Take the Fall?

"Remember, people will judge you by your actions, not your intentions."

To which I will add it matters little why something that was supposed to have been done wasn't. As this quote points out the world rewards action rather than intentions and/or for a list of things that prevented one from achieving results.

I totally agree however what responsibility if any does senior management have to make sure their direct reports can succeed? Or is it just a matter of "do it or else"?

  1. The old way would have been sink or swim but I hope we're beyond that.

There is much more managers do not control than there is they do so we can't just throw them out there and demand they succeed or leave if they don't.

  2. So much in all these posts and comments, this once included, points to the need for proactive team building. No one can do it alone.

Thinking about it, the majority of business books are written by some business superstar and/or the press touts someone like Gates or Jobs as if they singlehandedly made their companies what they are. That just isn't the case.

  3. Ok but what about individual accountability? I think management has gone too far in accommodating poor performers. Shouldn't the individual share responsibility for their own shortcomings?
