Motivation: What Role Does Management Play?

"Nobody motivates today's workers. If it doesn't come from within, it doesn't come."

Herman Cain
Commentator

Few will question the benefit, possibly even the need to have motivated employees particularly in sales but I wonder if Cain is right when he says they must be that way on their own.

Can management create motivation and enthusiasm and if they can is it true by corollary they can take it away?

  1. Everyone is motivated to do something. It is the job of the manager to motivate the employee to be a part of mission and make a difference for the organization.

  2. I agree but what specifically should management do to motivate?

I think part of the answer rests with the question: motivate them to do what? Work harder, smarter, more efficiently, better together, be more creative? The motivation for each of those might be different don't you think?

  3. This study (or at least the article describing the study) (http://tinyurl.com/5ls566) does not say how employees were encouraged to more enjoy their work but it does speak to the expected benefit when that happens.
