The French have not given up on the idea of state welfare taking care of everyone, even though they have major economic problems just as Italy, Spain, Ireland, and Greece have had.
While unhappy and wanting change, the French people are waiting for the state to make things better, but, as you said, "If you don't like where you are, change." Don't expect others, including the government, to do it for you.
And by the way, I am a French citizen living in Le Harve.
So true. Good people get better during difficult times, others not so much.
