Who You Know Or What You Know?

"I realized that talent would get me as far as middle management, but beyond that point it would become a matter of politics and currying favor with bosses."

Masahario Origuchi
Japanese businessman

Those who know Origuchi-san well will not be surprised by this statement.  His business history is, shall we say, colorful.

However there are many who firmly believe in and practice the power of office politics.

What about you?

  2. I do Jeannie but that's not to say it can't and shouldn't be addressed just because it is inevitable. However doing that is difficult.

When I started my first company, I vowed to not allow politics to take hold, and did what I thought was necessary to see that it didn't. I was naive.

We had politics including some I created myself, and not all of it bad (just most of it.) So now I conclude that while it will happen, management must acknowledge it and treat it as it would any other threat to the business.

Unfortunately too many managers spend more time claiming they and their peers are above such things rather than dealing with it.
