"It is respectable to have no illusions, and safe, and profitable and dull."
Joseph Conrad
Late 19th early 20th century British novelist
And in business, not always profitable.
If you're not envisioning (which can lead to illusion) you're not evolving and if you're not doing that at some point you're gone.
But don't you think there are "safe" conservative manager types along with risk taker types? I also think certain industries lend themselves to one versus the other. For example those which require a lot of engineers or scientist types are more prone to conservative, less visionary people, versus the entertainment industry that is all about vision.
ReplyDeleteI agree Catlin, there are different types of managers and not just the two you identified. And you're also right about manage types and companies aligning with each other. However that doesn't diminish the need for attempting to envision what might be; it just makes it more difficult to do if management tends towards conservancy.
