On Being Your Own Boss

"By working faithfully eight hours a day, you may eventually get to be a boss and work twelve hours a day."

Robert Frost
Early 20th century American poet

A variation of something I've often said about the time I've spent running my companies.

I'm in charge, no one tells me what to do.  Only I pick which 20 of every 24 hours I will work.

Thinking about starting your own company?

Think carefully.

  2. At the risk of being accused of picking your nit, we all do a lot of things we later wish we hadn't, so the fact that there are bad things associated with running my own companies is not enough to have stopped me from doing it.

But more than that, I didn't say don't do it or certainly that I wouldn't again if I had it to do over. In fact I would. My point was only that you need to think carefully about it.

This quote and my reaction is only to counter the extreme, unrealistic assumptions most have about running their own business. There are major negatives and you need to think as much if not more about that as you do the positives.

  3. Love that Robert Frost quote and have tweeted that one a time or two myself! Much truth to those words~ whether you are self employed and/or running a company, your tasks, responsibility and accountability multiply ~ Not quite the 'freedom' that people assume! ;-)
