CYA Management

"A memorandum is not written to inform the reader, but to protect the writer."

Dean Acheson
Early 20th century American attorney/statesman

As is true with many of these quotes, not always; however, sadly, way too many memos, emails, etc., are written for just that purpose.

  1. I think much the same thing could be said about many company policy manuals.

  2. CYA is shorthand for "cover your ass", meaning, do and and say things so you don't look bad, which may not be what's really best for the company.

I hadn't thought about company policy manuals, but I think you're right Michael. If companies acted as their policy says they will, they would appear a whole lot different than most do.
