I've participated in strengths and weaknesses sessions at work but never found them all that useful. It feels like we're coming up with superficial stuff not really reflective of the company. I've never tried that with myself but as I think about it I feel like I'm not doing any better with me personally than we did at work. Is there some trick to doing this better?
I know what you mean. There's more motherhood than substance in that sort of thing. But that's not a reason not to try to objectively identify strengths and weaknesses, both personally and professionally.
There are no tricks to doing this better that I know of; you have to challenge what you come up with to make sure it is valid and important. Just as is true with good writing you won't get it right the first time. I also think that if you don't end up with something that makes you feel a bit uncomfortable, you probably haven't work at it enough.
