"The cure for boredom is curiosity and there is no cure for curiosity."
Dorothy Parker
Early 20th century American satirist
Keeping employees engaged and interested in their work is in management's best interest, but is doing so also their responsibility?
If you mean do I have to also make sure they're happy?, No, that isn't my problem. I only have to pay them.
ReplyDeleteBut would your employees be better at their jobs if you did make some attempt to see that they were happy?
ReplyDeleteI've worked in several industries where management has ignored the happiness of their employees and it's always created a harsh environment. From Gatekeeper to Trusted Advisor author Andria Corso would say that while it's not management's responsibility, it would certainly improve morale.
ReplyDeleteI have as well Ryan and am certain some of my past employees feel I was guilty of that as well.
ReplyDeleteIt's not easy knowing what to do and not do but fortunately, my original question (". . . is doing so also their responsibility?") didn't ask what should be done. That is a subject for a much longer debate.
Management that does not believe they should be concerned with their employee's attitudes will not likely worry about what they should do were they to be concerned. But the rest of us will have to struggle with that.
