You will more often not get what you want/need if your only effort to get it is hope.

Here's what you do:

1. Identify your goal. Be certain you set the right goal.
2. Carefully plan what you need to do to achieve it.
3. Work really hard to execute the plan correctly.
4. Hope it all works out as you wish.

Do that and there's a good chance you will succeed.

Only do number 4 and your chance of success is greatly diminished.
