Where You Headed?

"If you don't know where you are going any road will get you there."

Lewis Carroll
19th century English mathematician/novelist

The off said planning version of this is "If you don't have clearly defined goals any plan will help you accomplish them."

As true in your personal life as it is in your professional life.

  1. I work in a relatively large company, about $120 million a year in sales, with just over 100 employees. Our CEO likes to encourage free thinking and has allowed, for the first time, all managers to develop whatever goals they wish for their jobs.

We're almost to the end of a year of this and it looks to me like a total disaster. I'd guess that close to half came up with easy to achieve bs motherhood stuff; things they couldn't possibly not achieve or that anyone else could prove they didn't. Worse yet, everyone's bonus in based solely on achievement of their goals.

I don't see the financial results, we're private, but from the look of it we're really sucking. I also don't know what the CEO/owner thinks but if he doesn't change this I'm out of here.

And by the way, I'm a manager; one who came up with real goals that mean something to the company.

  2. That does seem extreme. I think you'll have your answer when the current fiscal year ends and maybe before if, as you say, things are not going well.
