Investment: Talking to Angels

"Angels are like messengers, but sometimes we misunderstand their language."

Linda was likely referring to the heavenly type but the thought applies equally well to the investment version as well.

If you are looking for non institutional money to start or grow your business, learn the language of "angel" investors. If you do you will find it is as much if not more about what you will do for them as it is what they will do for you.

As it should be.

  1. I once shopped for investment capital, approaching a number of venture capitalists as well as individual "angel" investors. Looking back I see I was idea focused while they were all total business focused.

The idea is part of the business but there is much more to it than that and because I didn't have the complete package, no money.

  2. Thank you for sharing this Anonymous. In very few words you have summed up the problem (as well as the outcome) confronting many if not the majority of those looking for venture financing.

Whether or not those looking for funding ever find the money they need to start or grow their business, is uncertain, particularly in times like these. But don't make the process more difficult than it already is.

If it was your money, you would only want to invest in management that clearly sees all aspects of their business, both the bad as well as the good.

The best way to show that you do is in a clear, concise, complete business plan.

  3. "Angels are like messengers . . ."

I'm an angel and the message is this:

If you have the complete package, which is way more than just your idea or product, I will listen, and if you don't, I won't.

Bill said come with a clear, concise, complete business plan and he's right. Nothing else will do.
