Management: Always the Same?

"Any great idea can and eventually will be expressed as a cliche. A cliche is a sure and certain way to dilute an idea."

Solomon Short (aka David Gerrold)
Author/Playwright

Cliches can be useful to quickly make a point; however they are dangerous if they become behavioral.

For example, when reaction to a slow down in sales is automatically (and only) "reduce expenditures." Conserving cash may be necessary but does nothing to address the root cause of less sales.

To what extent does your organization manage by cliche?

  1. I don't think we so much manage by cliche as we do manage superficially. In other words we talk about the things we should but I don't often see us reaching well thought out conclusions.

  2. All of this comes down to looking for better ways doesn't it? I mean your example of automatically reducing expenses is the typical response but it sounds like you are saying management should look for other things as well. Right?

  3. Yes, better management is as simple as looking for new and better ways.

And, of course, as difficult because while finding new ways is not hard, finding better ways is.
